From the artist: "I had painted several Madonnas using this lovely model over the years. She always had such a tender and reverent way of holding the baby that was most inspiring to me. But I had never painted her in oil on canvas. This particular pose, with the veil on her head flowing back as if caught by the breeze, always appealed to me, but it remained just in sketch form for many years. When I came upon it again two years ago, I felt it was time to put it on canvas at last. I could finally begin to envision the background setting, and painting it in oil allowed for depth and color development, with layer upon layer of paint. Oil is a wonderful medium for this process.
"The clear cool light from the sky in the background of this piece feels to me like a light from the heavens breaking through the darkness — God casting His eyes and His blessing on the scene. The title refers to Luke 2:19-20: 'But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen....' I imagine fire and lamp light as the source of the softer, golden 'earthly' light in the foreground, as if carried by those who traveled to see the Child."
